When Does Landscaping Season Start?

As the weather begins to warm and the days become longer, you might be itching to get outside and enjoy your yard or start your vegetable garden.  Since you want a lush, green yard for you and your guests to enjoy, you might be wondering how soon you can start working on your lawn.  If you are eager to get to work on your garden or outdoor retreat, we have good news.  Landscaping season starts earlier than you might expect!

In North Vancouver, you can begin landscaping as early as March.  Most of the work at this point is in preparation for spring and summer, but there are several things you can do to give your yard a head start.  Tasks like soil testing and aeration are best done before the growing season is in full swing so that you have time to make adjustments to your soil if needed.  The official first day of spring occurs between March 19 and March 21 each year, so preparing your yard early will allow you to welcome spring with a healthy lawn!

If you are growing a vegetable garden, many seeds can be sown in March.  Broad beans and peas can be sown in early March, while most salad greens, spinach, and onions can be planted in mid to late March.  Flower gardeners can plant wildflowers and poppies in March as well.

By the beginning of April, landscaping season is in full swing.  You will generally need to start mowing your lawn regularly in April, and if you want to plant new grass, April is the time to do it.  Watering restrictions begin on May 1 every year, so it is important to plant new grass seeds by mid-April to ensure that you are able to provide them with the water they need to sprout before restrictions begin.

Vegetable gardeners do not need to worry about watering restrictions, as edible gardens can be watered as much as needed at any time.  Flower gardeners can also water flowers, shrubs, and trees by hand whenever needed.  By April, most spring flowers and vegetables can be sown directly in the ground.  The only vegetables you should wait to plant are warm weather vegetables like tomatoes and peppers.

April is also a great time for other lawn care services like power raking and fertilization.  Many weed and moss prevention methods are also best begun in early spring before your grass (and any potential weeds) become too prolific.  With all of these maintenance tasks accomplished early, you will be able to relax and enjoy the summer months in a healthy and thriving outdoor space!

The beginning of the growing season is an exciting time for both gardeners and outdoor leisure enthusiasts, but it can also be a very busy time.  If you have fallen behind on your spring landscaping tasks or just want a little help preparing your yard, give
